The Phoenicia Malta: A Royal Favorite in the Heart of Valletta

A Piece of Maltese History – With a Royal Seal of Approval

Some hotels have stories. Others are stories.
The Phoenicia Malta falls firmly into the second category. This iconic luxury hotel first opened its doors in 1947 and has since hosted everyone from world leaders to rockstars. But perhaps its most famous guest? A young Princess Elizabeth, before she became Queen. She lived in Malta with Prince Philip during his Royal Navy posting, and The Phoenicia became their favorite escape.

To this day, her signature remains proudly displayed in the hotel’s guestbook—a royal memory tucked into the lobby’s marble walls.

The Location: Steps From Valletta’s Magic

Situated right at the edge of Valletta’s ancient city walls, The Phoenicia boasts the best address in town. It’s walkable to all the capital’s museums, palaces, and churches, yet tucked away enough to feel like a retreat. The hotel sits within seven acres of serene, landscaped gardens, which lead to a gorgeous infinity-style outdoor pool overlooking the harbor.

It’s a rare blend of city energy and garden tranquility—perfect whether you’re sightseeing or sipping spritzes in the sun.

The Rooms: Mediterranean Calm Meets Modern Luxury

You’d be forgiven for expecting old-world opulence here—but The Phoenicia leans into something far more soothing. Rooms and suites are washed in whites and ocean blues, a clear nod to the surrounding sea. Designed with interior designer Peter Young, the accommodations blend timeless Maltese architecture (like original marble floors and traditional balconies) with contemporary comforts.

We stayed in the Pegasus Suite, which featured:

  • A luxurious stand-alone bathtub with Acqua di Parma products

  • A rain shower, plush robes, and full vanity kits

  • Complimentary minibar (yes, including local Cisk beer!)

  • Lavazza coffee machine with both regular and decaf pods

  • High-speed Wi-Fi and smart TVs for staying connected—or blissfully disconnected

Honestly, it was tempting not to leave the room.

🍽 Contessa Restaurant: A Must-Visit

Contessa is The Phoenicia’s fine-dining flagship—and absolutely lives up to the hype. Housed in a stunning glass conservatory with panoramic views, the space is ideal for romantic dinners or long, lazy brunches. Highlights from our meal included:

  • Rabbit Porchetta (a Maltese classic)

  • Fresh catch of the day

  • The dreamiest tiramisu, finished table-side

Bonus tip: If Isis Chardonnay is on the wine list, grab a bottle—it’s local, crisp, and unforgettable.

Breakfast is also served here, with a wide-ranging buffet and à la carte options. The fresh pastries were especially noteworthy.

Other Dining Options:

  • Bastion Pool Bar & Restaurant – Poolside eats with a view

  • Beefbar in the City – Chic dining with a bold menu

The Spa: Underground Bliss

The hotel’s newly updated spa is tucked underground and features:

  • Indoor lap pool

  • Salt room

  • Sauna & steam room

  • Multi-jet experience showers

  • A modern, fully equipped gym

We tried the “Sprunch” package (spa + bottomless brunch), and it was heavenly. For extra relaxation, garden massages are also available—definitely book in advance during peak season.

What to Do Nearby

Valletta alone is packed with experiences. We highly recommend:

  • St. John’s Co-Cathedral – One of the most breathtaking churches in Europe

  • Grand Master’s Palace – Dive into Malta’s knightly history

  • Legligin Restaurant – A 10-minute walk from the hotel, this hidden gem offers a surprise tasting menu featuring local, farm-fresh dishes and perfectly paired Maltese wines

Got time for day trips? Check out:

  • Gozo Island – For cliff views and rustic charm

  • Popeye Village – A fun, nostalgic coastal detour

  • Quad bike tours in Mellieħa – Off-road fun through the island’s wild side

Getting There: Easy and Affordable

Malta is just over three hours from the UK, with budget-friendly flights available from most major cities. We flew from Luton Airport and found that the National Express coach from Finchley Road was cheaper and just as fast as the train.

From Malta International Airport, The Phoenicia is just a 10-15 minute ride. You can grab a taxi, rideshare, or pre-arranged private transfer. Buses also stop right outside the hotel gates.

Final Thoughts: Should You Stay Here?

Absolutely.
The Phoenicia Malta is more than a hotel—it’s a legacy. Whether you’re here to explore the island’s culture, bask in luxury, or trace the steps of royalty, this landmark property is a warm, welcoming, and wholly unforgettable experience.
